A new frontier for innovation and growth

Bradfield is at the forefront of Western Sydney’s growth as a leading manufacturing, technology and innovation hub. Backed by AUD$1 billion investment from the New South Wales Government, Bradfield City Centre is expected to generate 20,000 direct jobs, attract private investment, and create 10,000 new homes.

As part of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, this 114-hectare city – named in honour of John Bradfield, the engineer behind the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city’s rail network – will become a magnet for advanced industries to locate and grow.

The new city capitalises on its proximity to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, enhancing its appeal to global industries and investors. The construction of more than $20 billion of key infrastructure, including the new Airport, position Bradfield as a pivotal driver of economic development in the region.

In addition to city shaping, Bradfield will drive industry growth, underpinned by investment in a state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) and Industry Skills Accelerator micro-credentials program, ensuring businesses have access to cutting-edge technologies and a highly skilled workforce.

With the strong alignment of the AMRF to the Commonwealth’s Future Made in Australia priorities, Bradfield is shaping up as an innovation precinct of national significance.

How Bradfield’s Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility will boost business

Bradfield will leverage world class technical capabilities through its Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF). This state-of-the-art facility will drive innovation in manufacturing by supporting businesses to scale and commercialise products.

The first stage AMRF will be equipped with precision machining capabilities, metal additive technologies, carbon fibre composites and digitisation tools, while the second stage will focus on cutting-edge semiconductor packaging technologies.

The AMRF is central to Bradfield’s role in driving innovation across advanced sectors requiring high-tech, high-quality manufacturing solutions. It will be a facility of national importance, addressing the barriers businesses face when looking to implement new manufacturing technologies that support the Future Made in Australia priorities, which will in turn enable new products and industries to be grown in Australia.

Anna Murray, President of the Australian Industry Defence Network (NSW), says the AMRF will be “immensely helpful” for small businesses that want to create and test prototypes with potential dual use applications in both the civil and defence sectors.

“We have some cutting-edge people in Sydney who want to really push the envelope,” she says. “The AMRF will welcome everyone. It will be really accessible to small businesses who have a good idea and want to test it out.

“The needs of the defence industry are always evolving and what they want may or may not exist now. People with bright ideas who can see a defence capability in what they’re creating can get government support to go and explore their ideas without having to invest a lot of money in technology and research or applying for grants to commercialise their ideas.”

Key capabilities of the AMRF:

The key capabilities of the AMRF include:

  • Advanced manufacturing equipment: The AMRF provides access to cutting-edge machines such as the DMG Mori Multi-Axis Turn-Mill and the CMS Kreator, supporting efficient, high-precision manufacturing for complex parts, and reducing material waste through sustainable 3D printing and milling.

  • Prototyping and product development: It offers resources for functional prototypes and technology demonstrators, helping to turn research into commercial products.

  • Process optimisation: The facility supports manufacturing process development, including process assessment and optimisation through field services.

  • Collaboration and industry solutions: AMRF enables industry collaboration to overcome challenges, improve productivity and enhance innovation.

  • Advanced materials capabilities: It houses advanced machines capable of working with high-strength materials such as nickel alloys and aluminium alloys, which are vital for industries like aerospace.

These capabilities position the AMRF as a critical hub for driving advanced manufacturing in NSW, supporting industry growth and innovation.

Leading Australia’s advanced manufacturing future

By delivering manufacturing innovation facilities through the AMRF and advanced training through the Industry Skills Accelerator micro-credential program, and fostering collaborative efforts between education, industry and government, Bradfield will accelerate Sydney’s leading role in advanced and emerging industries, bolstering Sydney’s status as a prime destination for business events in these sectors.

Bradfield’s role in shaping Western Sydney’s future is unparalleled. It offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the local economy and position Sydney as a global leader in advanced manufacturing and innovation.
