Pioneering innovation in Australian defence industries: the impact of Ocius technology

Articles

Ocius Technology, based at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, has emerged as a key player in the development of cutting-edge Australian defence industries, revolutionising the sector with its autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) and advanced marine surveillance technologies.

Ocius’ Bluebottle USVs (uncrewed surface vessels) testify to Australia’s leadership in innovative defence solutions. They offer new capabilities in anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance. From humble beginnings, Ocius has developed into a globally recognised name, supported by Sydney’s rich academic and research environment.

The origins of Ocius: from solar sailing to defence pioneer

Ocius Technology began its journey in 1997 under the name Solar Sailor, with an innovative focus on renewable marine technologies. The original concept, a solar sail that harnessed both wind and solar energy, won the company accolades, including the prestigious Australian Design Award. This innovation laid the groundwork for a pivot toward autonomous uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).

“The vision was to create a marine vessel that harnessed both solar and wind energy efficiently and in a seaworthy way,” explains Robert Dane, founder and CEO of Ocius Technology. “This early success set the stage for our evolution into autonomous marine technologies.”

In 2014, Solar Sailor rebranded as Ocius in 2013 to reflect its expanded focus. The company transitioned from commercial hybrid ferries to developing cutting-edge USVs.

“We saw an opportunity to push the boundaries of maritime technology,” says Dane. “Our rebranding marked a new chapter in our journey towards advanced, autonomous solutions.”

Defence applications of the Ocius Bluebottle

The Ocius Bluebottle represents a significant leap in maritime defence capabilities. Designed for extended operations, these vessels use solar, wind, and wave power to stay at sea for months carrying a range of sensors and payloads. The Bluebottle has been instrumental in various defence applications, including anti-submarine warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).

In 2017, Ocius partnered with Thales – a global technology company specialising in aerospace, defence, security and transportation based in France – to develop Bluebottle ‘BRUCE’, the first 19’ prototype Bluebottle tailored for the Royal Australian Navy.

Dane reflects on this milestone: “The successful deployment of BRUCE demonstrated our ability to deliver a high-tech, persistent surveillance platform that meets the rigorous demands of modern defence operations.”

The Bluebottle, Ocius’ star performer, has continued to make an impact with its use in critical defence scenarios such as the Autonomous Warrior War Games and ongoing support for the Australian Defence Force.

“Our technology’s ability to operate autonomously and provide continuous monitoring at disruptively low cost with minimal logistics and no one in harm’s way is a game-changer for defence strategies,” notes Dane.

Sydney: a hub for defence innovation and collaboration

Ocius Technology’s headquarters at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) highlights Sydney’s role as a hub for defence innovation. The city’s academic institutions foster a collaborative research and development environment that supports cutting-edge advancements in Australian defence industries.

“Being based at UNSW allows us to leverage a rich ecosystem of research and industry collaboration,” says Dane. “Sydney’s strong academic and industrial network is vital for driving innovation and maintaining Australia’s leadership in defence technology.”

Sydney’s integration of academic resources and industry expertise makes it a prime location for global business events in the defence sector. Ocius is a prime example of how Sydney’s strengths in research and development are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in defence technology.
